Buying a used electric camper

Electric campers have only been built for a few years, so used ones are still rare. Used electric vans are much easier to find, and many of them take a camping box. This page shows what a used van costs, what the battery warranty covers and what to check before you buy.

A used electric van plus a camping box

The cheapest way into an electric camper: a used van and a removable box that goes in and out in minutes. Prices are asking prices in Germany (listings, not sale prices) as of 7 Nov 2026; the battery warranty is the maker’s new-vehicle warranty and counts from first registration.

“Together” = median asking price plus the cheapest box: a worked example, not an offer. The median mixes all versions and mileages. Check that the box fits the wheelbase and model year of the van (stated on the box’s page). “New camper from” = cheapest complete camper on that base in our data, converted to euros.

Older electric vans

Among used electric campers there are also conversions of older vans. We list no boxes for them, but these figures:

  • Nissan e-NV200: used, median €11,000 (24 · 2014–2021)[16] · battery warranty 8 years / 100,000 miles (UK)[17]
  • Maxus eDeliver 3: used, median €22,000 (24 · 2022–2026)[18] · battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km[19]

What to check before you buy

Rules differ by country. This list follows the rules in the United Kingdom.

  • Battery

    Ask for a battery health (state of health) report. Warranties are often tied to the battery dropping to 70 % of its original capacity. Independent tests exist: in Germany, Aviloo charges €99.[20][21]

  • Conversion and warranty

    Which? advises finding out whether an owner has made modifications that could invalidate the warranty – a camper conversion is one. Ask for the converter’s invoice and paperwork. Kia states that the base vehicle warranty remains valid for conversions by its certified partners; we found no public rule for other makers.[22][23]

  • Habitation check

    A habitation check covers the gas system (if fitted) and, on the electrical side, the leisure battery, the RCD and cabling. Many electric campers have no gas on board at all.[24]

  • Registration (UK)

    The DVLA changes the body type to motor caravan only if the van meets its criteria, for example 2 or more windows on at least one side of the main body, and the equipment must be rigidly fixed – only the table may be removable. A van with a removable camping box therefore stays a van. Check the body type on the V5C.[25][26]

  • Weight

    Take the loaded camper to a weighbridge. In the UK, overloading can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points, and your insurer could refuse to pay out.[27][28]

Some rental companies sell their campers after a few seasons. These have electric campers in their fleet and sell used vehicles themselves:
